Mental Health Pandemic – Are You Aware of Your Thoughts and Emotions?

Ethel Gonzales

Because less than half of all people with mental illnesses receive treatment!! About half of mental disorders begin before the age of 14.

Mental disorders are the leading cause of disability in America. Approx. 33,000 Americans commit suicide every year. Just Clinical depression affects about 19 million Americans annually!

Some experts say all of us have mental health problems time to time.

Every year more than 250,000 people are admitted to psychiatric hospitals and over 4,000 people commit suicide in the UK.

The statistics for other countries too are shocking!!

It truly is a pandemic.

Mental health is about how we think, feel and behave. According to the World Health Organization Mental health is “a state of well-being in which one can cope with the normal stresses of life and can work productively… It’s not merely the absence of disease or illness.”

It’s the Mental health issues which are responsible for most of the people who are over weight, or who have a low self-esteem or have issues with their relationships or finances or their career.

Why do we have these problems?

The answer to that is unawareness. We are told a lot about physical health but most of us don’t know how to be emotionally healthy. No one teaches us how our thoughts, feelings and beliefs affect every area of our lives.

In fact the biggest reason why people smoke or get drunk or binge eat, consume drugs or self-harm is due to mental health problems because most of us don’t know how to deal with our negative thoughts and emotions.
